The first act of erasure is always the erasure of a name. A person's name in Torah is the vessel of their essence: 'And the man called names to all the beasts' was the first act of dominion, of giving meaning. The Nazis murdered Jews and tried to erase their names from history. Eighty-one years later, a German town council votes to ban new Stolpersteine. Same act, different key. The Gemara in Shabbat says one who embarrasses another it is as if they shed blood. How much more so when the dead are told their names no longer belong on their own streets. Remembering is a covenant, not a sentiment.
