ZAKA volunteers worked through a succession of tragedies across Israel and in Mexico over a single 24-hour period, responding to drownings, accidents, and deaths of children and adults. The Torah teaches that every human being is created in the image of God, and therefore the dignity of the dead is not a luxury but a sacred obligation. The Sages call this chesed shel emet, true kindness that can never be repaid, because the recipient is gone. ZAKA's volunteers embody this: they arrive at scenes others flee, they handle the unhandleable, and they ensure that no family faces the moment alone. In the busiest 24 hours of the year, they showed that the Jewish people's commitment to kavod ha-briyot, honoring every creature, knows no borders and no rest.
