A new study in JAMA reports that lung transplants may offer a survival benefit for select patients with advanced lung cancer confined to the lungs. All 17 transplant recipients survived one year, compared to an estimated 40.8% without the procedure. The findings are preliminary, based on a small, highly selected group, and longer follow-up is needed before broader conclusions can be drawn.
