The Hook in Your Mouth

You know what your problem is. You have been running the same patterns for years, managing the same frustrations, escaping through the same release valves. You tell yourself you will change after this project, after the kids are older, after things settle down. But things never settle down because you are not actually trying to change them.

Here is what you missed: God is not in a hurry with you.

You think divine patience is about mercy, about getting away with things. It is not. It is about the certainty that you will eventually have to face what you came here to do. The hook is already in your mouth. You can swim as far downstream as you want, but when the line goes tight, you are coming up to the boat.

The question is not whether you will live your mission. The question is how much of your life you will spend avoiding it.

Most of us learned Judaism as a system to maintain, not a purpose to live. We got the infrastructure but not the fire. Prayer became routine. Mitzvot became compliance. Community became a place to fit in rather than a place to serve from who you actually are.

This happened for a reason. After the Holocaust, survival meant rebuilding the structures first. Schools, synagogues, communities that could perpetuate themselves. The survivors did not have the luxury of asking what their individual purpose was. They had to make sure there would be a next generation at all.

But you are not rebuilding from ruins. You are living in the house they built. The question now is what you are going to do in it.

Your mission is not the same as your obligations. You still have to be Jewish in all the ways that means. But being Jewish is not your whole purpose any more than being American is your whole purpose. It is the context, not the content.

The content is what only you can do. The specific way you bridge people to themselves, to each other, to God. The particular problem you solve that nobody else solves the way you do. The thing that comes easy to you that other people struggle with.

You already know what it is. You have been avoiding it because it feels too big or too small or too risky or too obvious. You have been waiting for permission that is never coming.

Your mission comes easy because it is made of what you already are. Your correction comes hard because it requires you to become what you are not yet. Most people confuse the two. They make their mission into a project that requires massive effort and discipline. Then they wonder why it never gets off the ground.

The thing that energizes you, that you could do for hours without watching the clock, that people thank you for in ways that surprise you, that is your mission trying to surface. You keep pushing it down because it does not look serious enough or profitable enough or important enough.

But importance is not your decision. Importance is measured by what happens when you do the thing versus what happens when you do not do it. You are not qualified to judge your own impact any more than a kidney is qualified to judge its own importance to the body.

The pyramid is upside down in your life. Work has taken over everything. Family gets managed around work. God gets scheduled around work. Your mission gets deferred until after work succeeds enough to give you permission to care about something else.

This is why your wife makes chaos for you at home. She knows you need to grow and she knows growth requires disruption. You want order at home because you think you deserve rest after handling chaos at work all day. But she wants the relationship to grow, and growth means productive discomfort.

She will support your mission in ways she will never support your career ambitions. Career is about you getting ahead. Mission is about something larger getting served through you. She can tell the difference even when you cannot.

Your mission is not a hobby you will get to someday. It is not a retirement plan. It is what you are here for now, in the life you already have, with the responsibilities you already carry. The question is whether you will let it emerge or keep suffocating it with busyness and delay.

The hook is in your mouth. You can spend your energy fighting the line or you can turn around and swim toward the boat.
