Snow’s map, however, convinced almost no one at the time, and the outbreak was already waning when the handle came off.

The map everyone forgets is messier.

What Snow actually mapped

Snow’s 1855 map plots 616 deaths as black bars stacked at each address. The clustering around Broad Street is real. But so are the deaths scattered everywhere else, including areas served by other pumps that should have been safe if Snow’s water theory was correct.

The map shows thirteen deaths at the brewery on Broad Street, where 70 men worked directly above the suspect pump. By Snow’s logic, they should have died first and fastest. They didn’t die at all. The brewery had its own well.

More troubling for the water theory: the workhouse on Poland Street, housing 535 inmates, sat closer to the Broad Street pump than most victims’ homes. Five deaths total. The workhouse also had its own well.

Snow knew these problems. He spent pages in his 1855 report explaining why the brewery workers and workhouse inmates survived. He mapped every exception, traced every water source, interviewed every survivor who should have died. The work was meticulous. It was also invisible to anyone looking at the famous map.

What the map couldn’t show

The Broad Street outbreak peaked on September 1st. Snow removed the pump handle on September 8th. By then, deaths had already dropped from 127 on the worst day to fewer than a dozen. Snow himself acknowledged this timing in his report, though he argued the pump removal may have prevented a second wave.

The timing matters because it reveals what the map was actually doing. Snow wasn’t documenting a controlled experiment. He was building a case from circumstantial evidence, and he knew how circumstantial it was.

The cholera board investigating the outbreak concluded that miasma, not water, caused the deaths. Atmospheric conditions, they argued, had shifted by early September, explaining the decline. Snow’s pump theory, they noted, failed to account for why other pumps in the area remained safe, or why the outbreak’s timing followed atmospheric patterns rather than water consumption patterns.

They weren’t fools resisting obvious truth. They were scientists working with the same data Snow had, reaching different conclusions about what it meant.

Why the map worked anyway

Snow’s map succeeded not because it proved his theory, but because it made a different question unavoidable: what if cholera spreads through specific, traceable paths rather than general atmospheric corruption?

The miasma theorists could explain the Soho outbreak. Bad air had settled over the neighborhood, then lifted. Snow’s water theory explained it differently, but not necessarily better. What Snow’s map did was demonstrate that cholera could be mapped at all, that deaths followed patterns too precise to be atmospheric accidents.

The visual argument was spatial, not causal. Look at this clustering. Look at how tight it is. Look at how it follows streets, not wind patterns. Something specific is happening here, something that moves from place to place along routes you can trace.

The map raised the right question even when it couldn’t answer it conclusively.

What questions maps raise now

Every disease map since Snow’s carries the same tension between pattern and proof. COVID-19 heat maps show infection clusters, but clustering doesn’t always reveal causation. Cancer registries map elevated rates, but elevated rates don’t always point to single sources.

The power remains in the question the map makes impossible to ignore: if this isn’t random, what makes it this way?

Snow spent decades after 1854 gathering water samples, tracing supply routes, documenting cholera’s movement through London’s water system. The pump handle was theater. The real work was following every pipe until the pattern became undeniable.

His map didn’t prove the water theory. It proved that cholera had a geography precise enough to demand explanation, and that explanation would have to account for every exception, every survival, every death that fell outside the obvious cluster.

The question, once raised, wouldn’t let go.
