Torah perspective
Ten arrests after a weekend of violence in the West Bank. The reflex is to ask who is responsible for policing it, the army or the police. The deeper question is what happens to a person who takes a holy cause into his own hands. The sages taught that the zealot who acts without authority destroys more than he repairs, and the tradition is severe about it: Pinchas was granted a covenant of peace precisely because such an act, even when justified, leaves a wound in the soul. A people that carries a Divine mission cannot afford private wars. The land is acquired through restraint and law, not through rage. Whoever claims to defend it by breaking it has already lost the argument.
