Torah perspective
The Chief of Staff's order this week, suspending leave and reinforcing the Central Command so that elections can proceed safely, carries an old truth about what readiness actually is. The Talmud teaches that Torah scholars must increase watchfulness before a festival, not during it. Preparation is not the anxious opposite of trust; it is trust made concrete. The soldiers who stay at their posts so that citizens can vote are performing a mitzvah of the highest order, protecting the dignity of every person created in the Divine image. What looks like a pause in normal life is really the deepest form of service: holding the space in which others can act freely.
