Torah perspective
The claim that Torah study exempts a person from defending the nation rests on a narrow reading of the sources. The Rambam rules that even a Torah scholar must participate in the physical defense of the city. The Chassidic masters taught that the highest service of God integrates learning with action. A Jew learning Torah while his brother falls in battle is not fulfilling the Torah's highest will. The true talmid chacham is one who knows when to set aside the sefer and take up the sword, sanctifying God's name through the defense of His people. The exemption was a temporary concession, not a permanent ideal.
