Torah perspective
Dancing at the site of the Nova massacre on Simchat Torah is not defiance. It is the deepest expression of what the holiday actually means. The Torah reading of this day circles back to the beginning, to the moment before destruction, to the pure potential of creation. The hakafot are circuits, encircling reality with faith. To hold them where hundreds were murdered three years ago is to declare that the darkness of that day does not get the final word. The joy of Torah is not fragile. It is the vessel that holds the brokenness and transforms it into a dance. This is the secret of Simchat Torah: the Torah itself is the eternal tree of life, and its roots draw strength even from the deepest sorrow.
