The Torah's prohibition against bearing false witness cuts both ways: one may not speak falsehood, but neither may one withhold truth when silence lets evil mask itself as innocence. A Gazan photographer admitted holding back footage of hostage abuse on October 7. He chose gatekeeper over witness. The Hebrew word for witness shares a root with words meaning eternity and again: a witness testifies so the event reverberates across time. To hide what one saw is to deny the victim the echo of their suffering and to rob justice of its raw material. Do not stand by your neighbor's blood, the command applies as much to the camera's lens as to the outstretched hand.
