Torah perspective
The blessing Balaam was forced to utter, "a people that rises like a lioness" (Numbers 23:24), is read in synagogues this week in Parshat Balak. Rashi notes this verse applies not only to Israel's national resilience against enemies but to each person's morning: rising from sleep with the alacrity of a lion. The Sages codified this in the first line of Shulchan Aruch: "one should strengthen himself like a lion to rise in the morning for the service of his Creator." The daily act of getting up, before any politics, any strategy, any weapon, is itself the foundational expression of that lion-like strength the verse describes. The power to begin is already the blessing.
