Torah perspective
Two impulses tear at the heart of Am Yisrael: the fire of Torah that sustains the world, and the obligation of every soul to bear the weight of the nation's physical survival. Neither can claim absolute priority, for the covenant at Sinai was sealed with all of Israel standing as one body. The real question is not who learns and who serves, but whether the entire people remains bound together in a single covenant of responsibility.
