Torah perspective
Recovery from deep trauma rarely follows the route we expect. An elite soldier returns from Gaza shattered by what he saw and did, descending into heroin addiction. What saves him is not a therapist, a pill, or a sermon. It is a stray dog. The Torah teaches that divine Providence clothes itself in the particulars of our lives, often arriving through what seems lowly or accidental. The dog, the animal kingdom's most loyal outcast, mirrors the soldier's own sense of abandonment and raw need. When he reaches out to care for this creature, he is actually reaching for his own lost soul. The holy Baal Shem Tov taught that redemption hides in the very place we feel most broken. Sometimes the hand that pulls us up wears fur.
