Torah perspective
One hundred twenty-five boys who lost parents on October 7 gathered at the Kotel for a joint bar mitzvah. In the face of such shattering loss, the natural response might be to retreat into grief. Yet these young men chose to stand before the ancient stones and be called to the Torah. This is the depth of the Jewish soul: the ability to hold mourning and joy together, to take the very moment when darkness would claim everything and instead make it a point of light. Their aliyah to the Torah is a quiet act of defiance against despair, binding themselves to the chain of generations that refused to let tragedy have the last word.
