At Sinai the Jewish people declared na'aseh v'nishma, committing to act before comprehending the full terms. That is the nature of a covenant: a bond rooted not in calculation or self-interest but in shared identity and mutual responsibility. A contract can compel behavior; only a covenant can form character. When King Charles stood in Golders Green with wounded Jews and the first responders who treated both victim and attacker, he chose covenant over contract. No law forced his presence. And yet covenant without contract remains incomplete. The state must legislate, fund security, prosecute. The Jewish people said we will do, and then we will understand. The doing is the precondition of understanding, and the time for doing is now.
