Shavuot commemorates the moment the Jewish people stood at Sinai as one man with one heart. The Midrash teaches that the unity of Israel was the vessel that made the giving of the Torah possible. The Shechinah could descend only where there was harmony. When Jewish groups divide over political allegiances, refusing to sit together at a celebration of the very holiday that marks our receiving of the Torah, we lose something essential. The Torah was not given to any single faction or political camp. It was given to every Jew, from the greatest sage to the simplest soul. This is the deeper meaning of the covenant: a bond that transcends politics and unites us across all difference.
