Torah perspective
Forgetting is not an option, nor is it a virtue. The command to remember what Amalek did echoes through every generation because amnesia is the first victory of evil. A UN envoy telling Germany to forget the Holocaust is not merely political, it is a spiritual assault on the very structure of memory upon which moral civilization rests. The Hebrew word for forgetfulness, shikhechah, shares its root with being cast aside. To forget is to abandon the victims a second time. Remembering is the foundation of tikkun, of repair. We are commanded to be witnesses, not because we are stuck in the past, but because only a people that remembers can build a future where such darkness does not return.
