The Jewish people know what it means to flee persecution and find refuge. Irving Berlin's 'God Bless America' emerged from the ashes of a Russian pogrom and was broadcast the day after Kristallnacht. It is no accident that the song became America's unofficial anthem. The rabbi's line that antisemitism is 'un-American' is not political rhetoric but a statement of truth: a nation that forgets its gratitude to the refugee and the refugee's God begins to lose its soul. May we always remember where we came from and to Whom we owe thanks.
