Torah perspective
The camp of Israel must be holy, for God walks within it. When a soldier, even off duty, damages another's property, he profanes not only his own hands but the sanctity of the entire camp. The Torah's prohibition of wanton destruction (bal tashchit) applies with special force to those who bear arms in defense of the Jewish people. An army that disciplines its own for misbehavior, that confiscates weapons and dismisses reservists who cross the line, demonstrates something rare: that power is held in sacred trust, not personal license. This is the meaning of a camp where God dwells.
