Torah perspective
Cruelty to animals is not merely a legal infraction in Jewish thought; it is a spiritual rupture. The Zohar teaches that when a person acts with cruelty below, he awakens a corresponding harsh judgment above. The Torah commands us to be a merciful people, children of merciful ones, compassion is the seal of the Jewish soul. An act of violence against a defenseless creature, whether by Jew or non-Jew, is a desecration of the divine image in which all life is rooted. The path of return begins with recognizing that every living being carries a spark of the Creator, and that kindness to animals is the first rung on the ladder of holiness.
