Torah perspective
Jerusalem is alive because it was never merely a place. It is the point where heaven and earth meet, the gate through which prayer ascends and blessing descends. The Psalmist says "The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob" (Tehillim 87:2). A dwelling can be replaced; a gate cannot, because a gate is where relationship happens. Jerusalem is that living gate for the Jewish people and for the world. When we say it is alive, we mean that the Divine presence never departed from it, and every generation that turns toward it is turning toward life itself.
