Torah perspective
Jewish teens choosing gap years in Israel, defying the post-October 7 climate, is not merely a statistical rebound. It speaks to something primordial in the Jewish soul: the pull of the land and the people that no threat can extinguish. After tragedy, one might expect retreat. Instead, the opposite is happening. The encounter with vulnerability has awakened a need for rootedness. This mirrors the pattern of the exodus, where the descent into darkness became the very catalyst for national birth. These young people are choosing to write themselves into the Jewish story not as readers but as participants. That choice, freely made, carries the deepest kind of continuity.
