Torah perspective
Jerusalem has never been merely a city of stone and mortar. The KKL-JNF photographs from between the 1930s and 1950s capture a city in transition, ancient alleyways of the Old City alongside the construction of new neighborhoods. This juxtaposition is the soul of Jerusalem. The Sages teach that Jerusalem is called 'the city that makes all Israel friends' (Yerushalmi, Chagigah). What appears as a blend of old and new is really the unfolding of one Divine plan: the physical rebuilding of the earthly city mirrors the spiritual ingathering of Israel. Jerusalem's layers are not contradictions; they are successive revelations of the same holy light, each generation adding its verse to the song.
