Torah perspective
A synagogue is a miniature sanctuary, a mikdash me'at, where the Divine presence dwells among the congregation. When hostile voices gather outside its walls, chanting slogans of hatred, the moment echoes the Purim story: Haman's fury at Mordechai's refusal to bow. Yet the Torah's response is instructive. Not retaliation, not despair, but strengthened attachment to the very holiness under attack. The Jewish people have faced such assemblies before. What keeps the sanctuary standing is not the absence of enemies but the presence of those who show up for prayer anyway. The light in the window outlasts every shout in the street.
