The synagogue is a mikdash me'at, a miniature sanctuary. When masked protesters gather outside one to chant "Brick by brick, wall by wall, Zionism will fall," they reveal a profound confusion. The Land of Israel and the Jewish people are bound together in the Torah as an eternal covenant. To attack one in the house of the other is to misunderstand both. The prophet Zechariah promised that in the end of days, ten men from all nations will grasp the corner of a Jew's garment and say, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you." The opposite impulse, to gather against rather than with, is the old hatred dressed in new clothes. The synagogue stands, and the Land endures, because the promise is not made by human hands.
