Torah perspective
The distinction between comfort and covenant is the difference between dwelling in a land and being wedded to it. The mitzvah of Yishuv Eretz Yisrael is not a real estate transaction or a security arrangement. It is a marriage. A marriage built on convenience dissolves when convenience fades. A marriage built on covenant endures through every storm. The American Jewish community's comfort was never the problem, but mistaking it for destiny was. Destiny means being bound to a place even when it costs you something. The Land of Israel does not exist to make Jews feel safe. It exists to make Jews who we are. When we confuse those two, we lose both.
