The obligation of Genizah in the Age of Recycling
It is Biblically forbidden to erase any of the Names by which God is called. Ideally, source sheets and pamphlets whose purpose is Torah study should be placed in genizah.
Assessment
The tension between the religious duty to preserve sacred texts and the environmental imperative to recycle raises practical questions for observant communities. As printed materials proliferate, the traditional genizah process may conflict with modern waste management. Watch for rabbinic guidance on how to reconcile these values without compromising either principle.
