Let voters have a say in who they vote in to Knesset - opinion
The adoption of a ‘semi-open ballot’ in Israel enjoys broad support across the political spectrum, both among civil society organizations and among the members of Knesset and their parties.
Assessment
Israel's current closed-list system allows party leaders to determine Knesset seats, which concentrates power and reduces voter influence. A semi-open ballot would let voters directly choose among party candidates, shifting accountability from party bosses to constituents. The proposal has unusual cross-spectrum backing, but translating this consensus into legislation will test whether parties will act against their own gatekeeping privileges.
